How Whole-House Water Filters Are Installed

Typical point-of-entry layout

A whole-house system is normally placed after the service shutoff or well pressure equipment and before the plumbing branches, following the manufacturer layout. Treatment order, bypass design, water-heater placement, drain, power, and backflow requirements vary by system and jurisdiction.

The planning sequence

  1. Confirm the water report and exact treatment train.
  2. Check rated flow, pressure limits, pipe size, pressure drop, service clearance, power, drain, temperature, and environment.
  3. Plan isolation valves, unions, bypass, supports, gauges, pressure control, and grounding continuity as required.
  4. Install in the documented flow direction without loading the housings or heads with pipe weight.
  5. Flush, sanitize, leak-check, purge air, and commission exactly as the manuals direct.
  6. Record baseline pressure and verify treated-water performance with the appropriate follow-up test.

Jobs that should stop the DIY plan

  • Unclear electrical bonding or grounding continuity.
  • A pressure vessel, UV electrical system, backwashing drain, or chemical feed.
  • A well with confirmed microbial contamination or a health-standard exceedance.
  • No workable bypass, service clearance, or freeze protection.
  • Permit, backflow, seismic support, or potable-material uncertainty.
