A practical private-well baseline
EPA recommends annual private-well testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids, and pH, with additional tests based on local conditions and warning signs. Use the state or local health department to locate a certified drinking-water laboratory.
- Add iron, manganese, hardness, and hydrogen sulfide when staining, scale, or odor is present.
- Add lead and copper where plumbing or corrosion is a concern.
- Add relevant pesticides, volatile organic compounds, radionuclides, or other analytes based on nearby activities and local guidance.
- Retest after flooding, well repairs, a new treatment system, or a material change in taste, odor, color, or illness pattern.
What is not a safety test
- A handheld TDS number does not identify specific contaminants.
- Clear, cold, or good-tasting water is not proof of microbiological or chemical safety.
- Orange staining suggests possible iron but does not identify concentration or treatment conditions.
- A seller's free strip test may be useful screening, but health decisions should use an appropriate certified laboratory.
Turn results into a treatment brief
- List every detected concern, concentration, and applicable health or aesthetic benchmark.
- Record pH, hardness, turbidity, iron/manganese, and peak-flow requirements that affect equipment selection.
- Ask each vendor to map a specific technology and certified claim to each target.
- Reject systems that cannot state feed-water limits, rated flow, maintenance, and how performance will be verified after installation.
